The North Bay Police Service (NBPS) is reminding motorists that studded tires must be removed from vehicles by May 31, in accordance with Ontario law.
Under the Highway Traffic Act, vehicles registered in Northern Ontario may use studded tires between Sept. 1 and May 31. Studded tires are not permitted on vehicles registered in Southern Ontario, except when travelling to or from Northern Ontario during this period.
Drivers who continue to use studded tires beyond May 31 may be subject to a fine.
NBPS also reminds motorists that studded tires are less effective on bare pavement than all-season or summer tires, which can impact traction and increase stopping distances in warmer conditions.
Motorists are encouraged to remove studded tires before the deadline to improve road safety and avoid potential penalties.
