Media Release: Road Safety Week Traffic Blitz Results in Various Fines

The North Bay Police Service’s Traffic Enforcement Unit along with the Officers from the Patrol Section, took part in Road Safety Week from May 12th to 19th, by intensifying traffic enforcement in a week-long blitz. The week culminated on Friday with a Commercial Motor Vehicle enforcement day, in partnership with the OPP.

“The goal is public safety, as traffic collisions are a leading cause of preventable death and injury to both the public and the police.” States Traffic Enforcement Officer, Douglas MacIntosh.

As a result of the week-long blitz, the following charges were laid:

  • 45 Speeding, including one in a Community Safety Zone (fines doubled)
  • 6 Drive - Hand Held Device
  • 1 Careless Driving
  • 1 Follow Too Closely
  • 1 Red Light - Fail to Stop
  • 2 Amber Light – Fail to Stop
  • 1 Disobey Lane Light
  • 1 Insecure Load
  • 1 Defective Braking System
  • 1 No Muffler – Motor Vehicle
  • 1 Driver Fail to Surrender Licence
  • 1 Fail to Surrender Permit for Motor Vehicle

Also, 4 - 72-hr written warnings were issued for; Obstruct Plate (2), Colour Coating (tint) Obstructing Interior, and Fail to Notify Change of Address.

In addition, 8 Fail to Stop for School Bus investigations were conducted, with 5 warning-letters being sent to vehicle owners.

On Friday May 16th, in a joint enforcement operation, the OPP laid an additional 18 Speeding charges and seized one vehicle for Stunt Driving – (104 km/hr in a posted 60 km/hr zone).

In total, 81 charges were laid and 10 warnings were issued during the week-long campaign.

Compared to the week prior, there was a 50% reduction in the number of injury-causing collisions in North Bay during the Road Safety Week Traffic Blitz.
